Antique Stone and Its Types
Antique Stone
Due to its extraordinary strength, diversity, visual appeal, and beautiful colors, human beings have long used antique stone in building exterior facades and interior spaces. One of these beautiful and practical stones is antique stone (stacked stone). Antique stone refers to a type of stone crafted by assembling broken and crushed pieces of other natural stones. These small stone fragments are bonded together using a resin-based adhesive to create a stunning piece known as antique stone, which is also commonly referred to as split-face stone or guillotine stone. The word "antique" in English signifies an old, highly valuable, and precious item. Antique stone is particularly widely used in interior wall cladding and decoration.
Types of Antique Stone
Generally, antique stone is available in the market in two types: natural and synthetic. Natural antique stone is mostly made from travertine, whereas the synthetic version is produced using cement plast. Overall, this stone is typically crafted from processed fragments of travertine, marble, onyx, and traonix.
Types of Antique Stone Based on Material
Antique stone comes in both natural and synthetic varieties. Naturally, it is made primarily from travertine and occasionally granite. Various types of stones are utilized in crafting antique stone, which we will briefly review below.
Travertine
Travertine is one of the most durable and popular building stones. This sedimentary rock is widely used in decorative stone applications and feature walls.
Granite
Following basalt, granite is one of the most abundant rocks found in nature and the Earth's crust. It is extremely popular worldwide and has numerous applications, especially in interior design and kitchen countertops.
Malon (Quarried / Chiseled Stone)
This stone is shaped into rubble stone using hammers and sledgehammers, and is chiseled with specialized tools. Malon stone features a wide variety of colors and has numerous applications. It is also referred to as rubble stone or fieldstone.
Decorative Onyx / Marble Stone
Onyx (and translucent marble) is produced as split-face (guillotine) or decorative stone. It has extensive applications in interior decoration and is frequently utilized in luxury apartments for both interior feature walls and high-end exterior accents.
Marble Antique Stone
Marble antique stone is one of the most luxurious options for interior decoration and cladding. These antique tiles are specifically crafted from leftover fragments of marble and travertine.
Installation of Antique Stone
Due to its eye-catching beauty and uniqueness, antique stone is applied in both building facades and interior decor. Installing antique stone on various surfaces requires high precision and skill. Generally, there are three primary installation methods, which we will examine below.
Wet Grouting Method
Grouting is a traditional and common method for installing facade and decorative stones. In this technique, cement mortar is poured behind the stones. It is vital that the mortar thoroughly penetrates all cavities behind the stone to ensure a secure bond and proper attachment to the wall.
Tile Adhesive / Bond Method
When using tile adhesive, the target substrate must be completely flat and smooth. The adhesive is spread evenly over the surface using a notched trowel, after which the antique stone pieces are precisely installed. Various tile adhesives are available depending on the specific application and cure time required.
Screw and Wall Plug Method
One of the newer methods for stone installation is using screws and wall plugs (anchors), which has gained significant popularity. This method avoids the mess associated with mortar or adhesives and allows for quick installation. However, extreme caution is necessary, as there is a high risk of stone breakage, requiring delicate and meticulous handling.
Price of Antique Stone
Like other stone products, the price of antique stone depends on numerous factors, including the type of material, surface area, dimensions, processing quality, and more.
